A Singaporean couple asked me to find them a holiday home in JB. We ended up planning their retirement instead.
Your situation is different? Ask me on WhatsApp. I reply myself, usually the same day.

Clients C and D are in their early 50s. Their brief was simple: a weekend place, somewhere to unwind an hour from home. Nothing more complicated than that.
What came out as we talked
- They were about ten years from retirement.
- They had not worked out their cost of living once they stopped working.
- JB kept coming up as somewhere they might actually want to live, not just visit.
So the question changed. Not “which unit suits a weekend trip?”, but “does this fit a life you might retire into, and do the numbers work with your retirement funds?”
A holiday home and a retirement home need different things
| Weekend home | Future retirement home | |
|---|---|---|
| Location | Easy trip from the Causeway | Near hospitals, shops and daily needs |
| Layout | Compact is fine | Lift access, space, ideally fewer stairs |
| Money | Spare cash | Must fit your retirement funds and income |
| Paperwork | Buy as a foreigner | Also a long-stay visa, such as MM2H, and healthcare cover |
The property search became the second decision. The retirement plan came first. If a “holiday home” might one day be where you retire, it is worth planning properly now rather than just browsing listings.
