Case Study: They Asked for a Holiday Home. We Planned Their Retirement

A Singaporean couple asked me to find them a holiday home in JB. We ended up planning their retirement instead.

The first request

Clients C and D are in their early 50s. Their brief was simple: a weekend place, somewhere to unwind an hour from home. Nothing more complicated than that.

What came out as we talked

  • They were about ten years from retirement.
  • They had not worked out their cost of living once they stopped working.
  • JB kept coming up as somewhere they might actually want to live, not just visit.

So the question changed. Not “which unit suits a weekend trip?”, but “does this fit a life you might retire into, and do the numbers work with your retirement funds?”

A holiday home and a retirement home need different things

Weekend homeFuture retirement home
LocationEasy trip from the CausewayNear hospitals, shops and daily needs
LayoutCompact is fineLift access, space, ideally fewer stairs
MoneySpare cashMust fit your retirement funds and income
PaperworkBuy as a foreignerAlso a long-stay visa, such as MM2H, and healthcare cover

The property search became the second decision. The retirement plan came first. If a “holiday home” might one day be where you retire, it is worth planning properly now rather than just browsing listings.
